A startup that grew out of research at the Medical University of South Carolina and The Citadel has hit the market and closed on a new round of funding.

EyeStat, cleared by the FDA, delivers data about the blink reflex in less than a minute. It stimulates and measures the blink reflex using light puffs of air, high-speed videography and a proprietary algorithm.

EyeStat (blinktbi, Charleston, SC), a portable, lightweight device for measuring the natural blink reflex, received clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2019.

EyeStat looks very much like a virtual reality headset, albeit one that fires five random puffs of air at the eyelashes over a 20-second period. The eyes respond by blinking, which EyeStat records. In under a minute, the device delivers its result.
